Programme Structure

The MGPE is a one-year full-time and two-year part-time Taught Master’s degree programme.

  • A minimum of 24 units required for graduation
  • 9 units for Required Courses
  • At least 6 units for Topical Courses
  • At least 6 units for Regional Courses

Full-time and part-time students are expected to complete the programme within one and two years respectively.

MGPE is a renowned interdisciplinary programme that features the concept of “global” by linking closely global trends with local dynamics. It is directly applicable to the financial and management world, and offers timely and integrative knowledge to students on issues covering global politics and global economy.

MGPE examines the interaction between international relations and the global economy by systematically offering a series of inter-disciplinary and timely academic courses to analyze and explain our world in an era of financial crises and global insecurity.

In addition to analyzing economic concepts and their effects on the political economy, the Programme focuses heavily upon the political determinants and effects of economic outcomes.

MGPE offers students a comprehensive insight into the discipline of global political economy. University degree holders from all disciplines who intend to enhance their competitiveness in respective careers; pursue future professional development in the fields of Finance, Management, Consultancy, Policy Research or NGO development; or plan for doctoral training with academic prospect are welcome to apply.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree. English Language Requirements: TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based); IELTS (Academic): 6.5; GMAT (Verbal): Band 21.

For international students

Applicants must satisfy one of the following:

  1. graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honors not lower than Second Class; or
  2. graduated from an honors programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B" ; or
  3. completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honors degree.

To fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:

obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or

achieved scores in the following English Language tests2 as indicated:

  • TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based);
  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5;
  • GMAT (Verbal): Band 21; or

obtained a pass grade in other English language requirements equivalent to HKDSE or

obtained a recognized professional qualification, provided that the examination was conducted in English.
