What will I learn?

The programme is designed to provide a rigorous training in the principles and the practice of statistics. It emphasizes in applications and aims to prepare candidates for further study, research, consulting work and administration in various fields through computer-aided and hands-on experience. Candidates should have knowledge of matrices and calculus. Candidates for the full-time programme should also have knowledge of introductory statistics and linear modelling.

The programme offers great flexibilities for students who wish to take a general approach, or a specialized theme in Risk Management or Data Analytics. For a specialized theme, there are core courses and elective courses for students to choose from.

Students joining the programme are expected to come from a wide range of disciplines. The programme is recommended for those at work to be part-time students and will benefit from interaction with classmates of similar or different backgrounds as well as for fresh graduates to be full-time students to get a postgraduate degree before working.

Programme Learning Outcomes

1. To acquire advanced knowledge in statistics and practical skills of applying appropriate statistical methods, models and techniques, and develop new knowledge and skills through life-long learning

2. To equip with hands-on experience in statistical and risk analyses using commercial statistical software and be competent for data-analytic jobs which require advanced computational skills

3. To make informed decisions on complex real-life problems encountered in the data explosion era

4. To communicate effectively with the layman on statistical issues

5. To critically evaluate and to make proper use of models and techniques for data analyses and risk management, and to appraise the related ethical issues

6. To prepare to be confident statisticians for providing professional view on statistical issues

Entry requirements

For students from United States

To be eligible for admission to the courses leading to a taught postgraduate qualification, a candidate: shall hold a Bachelor's degree of this University or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or another comparable institution accepted for this purpose. English Language Requirements: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): a score of 550 or above in the paper-based TOEFL; or a score of 213 or above in the computer-based TOEFL; or a score of 80 or above in the internet-based TOEFL; or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - A minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5; or GCE (General Certificate of Education) - Grade C or above; or IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) - Grade C or above; or Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language - Grade C or above.

For international students

  • A Bachelor's degree with Honours or an equivalent qualification; and
  • Applicants should have knowledge of matrices and calculus, introductory statistics and linear modelling.

English Language Requirements

In addition to satisfying the requirements for admission to the curriculum concerned, an applicant who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain one of the following examination result.

A. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
1. a score of 550 or above in the paper-based TOEFL; or
2. a score of 213 or above in the computer-based TOEFL; or
3. a score of 80 or above in the internet-based TOEFL; or

B. IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
A minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5; or

C. GCE (General Certificate of Education)
Grade C or above; or

D. IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education)
