What will I learn?

The Division of Systems Engineering & Engineering Management offers a suit of research and taught programmes within Faculty of Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Our emphasis is placed on the integration of identifying issues in the business practices, mathematical modeling skills, and solutions with the help of information technologies. Students will be trained in these aspects and are expected to master the theory and practice of a research topic arising from the area.

MPhil Stream

Each MPhil student is required to complete at least 4 graduate courses with a total of 12 units, and must register for the relevant Thesis Research Course in every term throughout his/her study period.

Each MPhil student is required to submit a thesis and pass the oral defence of the thesis for graduation.

PhD Stream Pre-candidacy

Each PhD student is required to complete at least 4 graduate courses with a total of 12 units during the pre-candidacy stage, including at least 1 faculty core course, and must register for the relevant Thesis Research Course in every term throughout his/her study period.

Each PhD student is required to pass a written candidacy examination within the maximum period of his/her pre-candidacy stage for the advancement to his/her post candidacy stage. The purpose of this examination is to test the student’s basic knowledge and understanding in the SEEM discipline.

Each PhD student is required to submit a written thesis proposal and pass the oral defence of the proposal within the maximum period of his/her pre-candidacy stage.

PhD Stream Post-candidacy

Each student is required to complete at least 1 graduate course with a total of 3 units during the post-candidacy stage, and must register for a Thesis Research Course every term throughout his/her study period.

Each student is required to submit a thesis and pass the oral defence of the thesis for graduation.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree. English Language Requirements: TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based); IELTS (Academic): 6.5; GMAT (Verbal): Band 21.

For international students

To be admitted to the MPhil stream, applicants shall have:

  • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or
  • graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or
  • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.

To be admitted to the PhD stream,

  • a Master's degree from a recognized university; or
  • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or
  • graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or
  • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.

To fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:

obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or

achieved scores in the following English Language tests2 as indicated:

  • TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based);
  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5;
  • GMAT (Verbal): Band 21; or

obtained a pass grade in other English language requirements equivalent to HKDSE or

obtained a recognized professional qualification, provided that the examination was conducted in English.
