What will I learn?

The objective of the M.Sc. in Economics programme is to provide rigorous training in economics and enable students to conduct analyses of economic issues. The programme would be suitable for those who wish to pursue further studies in economics and related disciplines or seek professional positions in private and public sectors that require solid knowledge in economics and analytical skills.

Programme Objectives

Endows students with advanced knowledge in economic science including microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and many applied fields so as to lay a solid foundation for pursuing PhD degree studies and doing research work.

Cultivates skills in quantitative analyses involving the application of econometric tools to analysing data sets, deriving estimates, testing hypotheses, and making forecasts.

Equips graduates with economics knowledge and econometrics skills to make economic analysis, especially analysing the Chinese Economy and other Asian economies, so as to excel in professional positions of diverse organizations, such as financial institutions, government departments, and consultancies.

Career Prospects

The career prospects of our graduates are excellent. With their specialized understanding of economic science and quantitative skills, they are among the most desired employees in the job market, particularly in the banking and finance sector. Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree. English Language Requirements: TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based); IELTS (Academic): 6.5; GMAT (Verbal): Band 21.

For international students

Applicants must satisfy one of the following:

  • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honors not lower than Second Class; or
  • graduated from an honors programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B" ; or
  • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honors degree.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants

  • should have a good background in Mathematics or Statistics (preferred);
  • will be assessed on the basis of their past academic record, work experience, references and language abilities

To fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:

obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or

achieved scores in the following English Language tests2 as indicated:

  • TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based);
  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5;
  • GMAT (Verbal): Band 21; or

obtained a pass grade in other English language requirements equivalent to HKDSE or

obtained a recognized professional qualification, provided that the examination was conducted in English.
