What will I learn?

The Master of Science in Information Engineering (MScIE) programme aims at offering an all-round taught-postgraduate programme to develop information and communication technology leaders.

Courses offered by the programme aims at offering students:

1. theoretical and practical knowledge about ICT and information engineering;

2. exposure to innovations, entrepreneurship, and IT management; and

3. a strong social network in the ICT industry.

Curriculum

The programme curriculum consists of courses in three main categories:

  • Networks and Communication Systems
  • Software and Applications; and
  • Business and Technology Management

Besides, students can select MPhil-PhD taught courses offered by the Department of Information Engineering (click here for courses offered in 2015-16). They can also opt to conduct a credit bearing MSc research project, subject to mutual agreement between students and their potential project supervisors.

Normally, a total number of 10-12 courses are offered in each academic year; while a small portion of courses may not be offered in a particular academic year.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree. English Language Requirements: TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based); IELTS (Academic): 6.5; GMAT (Verbal): Band 21.

For international students

Applicants must satisfy one of the following:

  1. graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honors not lower than Second Class; or
  2. graduated from an honors programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B" ; or
  3. completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honors degree.

To fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:

obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or

achieved scores in the following English Language tests2 as indicated:

  • TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based);
  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5;
  • GMAT (Verbal): Band 21; or

obtained a pass grade in other English language requirements equivalent to HKDSE or

obtained a recognized professional qualification, provided that the examination was conducted in English.
