What will I learn?

Initiating from the complexity of contemporary housing issues derived from urbanization and social, economic and environmental interactions, the master of social science program in housing studies (MSSc. HSS) was launched be center for housing innovations (CHI), Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific studies (HKIAPS). The objective of MSSc. HSS is to promote cutting-edge housing research outcomes especially the integrity of cultural and technical accepts to the young generations so as to grow up their comprehensive talents to support the sustainable housing development correspondently.

Supported by solid foundation of housing research and industry training experience of CHI in the past two decades, the program covers three domains regarding housing: environmental simulation and green building; housing planning and urban design; and construction management and Eco balance, aiming to further promote excellent academic achievements and local culture to students and related professionals. Students will be educated with housing issues in mainland china, Hong Kong and abroad for the purpose of creating effective, affordable and sustainable living environment. Via systematic education of program, students will be equipped with required expertise for career in relevant fields and meet the demand of such talents in future.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree. English Language Requirements: TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based); IELTS (Academic): 6.5; GMAT (Verbal): Band 21.

For international students

Applicants must satisfy one of the following:

  1. graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honors not lower than Second Class; or
  2. graduated from an honors programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B" ; or
  3. completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honors degree.

To fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:

obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or

achieved scores in the following English Language tests2 as indicated:

  • TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based);
  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5;
  • GMAT (Verbal): Band 21; or

obtained a pass grade in other English language requirements equivalent to HKDSE or

obtained a recognized professional qualification, provided that the examination was conducted in English.
