What will I learn?

Building services primarily include air-conditioning and ventilation, electrical distribution and lighting, active fire protection, plumbing and drainage, vertical transportation, security, telecommunication, and building automation systems. Satisfactory performance of these systems is crucial to providing a safe, healthy, comfortable and productive environment for people and processes in buildings.

Building Services Engineering (BSE) is a multi-disciplinary profession which entails the application of art and science in design, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of services systems for buildings. Given the ever-rising needs and expectations of users, building services systems have become increasingly sophisticated, leading to the mounting demand for competent building services professionals.

Worldwide there have been growing recognitions that the performance of buildings and their services systems has significant impacts on the environment. The prevalent pursuit of green and sustainable buildings further highlights the vital role that building services professionals have to play in enhancing such aspects as energy conservation, indoor environmental quality, resources recycling, waste minimization and pollution control associated with the use of buildings.

Building Energy

Energy issues in the building and built environments are addressed in the context of both demand and supply. We work on enhancing energy efficiency on the demand side by optimized design and smart control of energy systems and use of nano-coatings. One the supply side, we promote effective use of renewables as well as innovative use of waste for clean energy generation.

It covers:

  • Advanced air-conditioning and refrigeration technology
  • Building automation, optimal control and design
  • Building demand response for smart grid
  • Energy efficient operation and maintenance
  • Renewable energy applications in buildings: solar energy, wind energy and ground source heat pump technologies
  • Smart energy system
  • System simulation

Entry requirements

For students from United States

To register for the degree of PhD, a student must normally hold a postgraduate degree containing a significant research component, such as a dissertation, conferred by a recognized university. In exceptional circumstances, applicants other than those stipulated above may be admitted directly to the PhD programme. For example, an applicant with a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours, or the equivalent. Such applicants may be required to pass an examination. PolyU may accept other equivalent qualifications. The decision is made on an individual basis. The requirements for those who do not have a degree for which English was the language of instruction at a recognized university are: An overall score of at least 6.5 (with score for the writing component at 6.0 or above) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 or above for the Internet-based test (with a writing score of 23 or above) or 550 or above for the paper-based test (with a score of 4 or above in the Test of Written English). Alternatively, consideration will be given to acceptable scores in other internationally recognized public examinations, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). All English language test scores are considered valid for five years after the date of the test.
