This research area examines Neo-Confucian conceptions of man’s place in the universe, universal principles and their particularistic manifestations, knowledge and action in learning, perfection of the self, moral uplifting of the populace; articulations for a strong government, social and cultural integration; major Neo-Confucian schools and their doctrines, major works of Neo-Confucianism, the philosophies of Zhu Xi and Wang Yangming, the ideological rebels of late Ming, Confucian reflections in early Qing.
The Department of Chinese Culture (CC) was established in September 2008. Its mission is to impart to students knowledge about the culture of China, to help them broaden their intellectual horizons and to reach an integrated understanding of the relationship between self and society, so that they can develop foundations for their future careers, improve the quality of their lives and become responsible national and world citizens in this age of globalisation.
To fulfill its mission, in addition to offering an undergraduate and a taught postgraduate programme related to the culture of China, CC offers research programmes in Chinese culture leading, respectively, to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

3-year full-time PhD programme
Normally hold an MPhil or equivalent (a research postgraduate degree with a dissertation as an award requirement) conferred by a recognised university.
4-year full-time PhD programme
Normally hold:
A Master’s degree; OR
A Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours (or equivalent qualification), conferred by a recognised university.
PolyU may accept other equivalent qualifications. The decision is made on an individual basis.
English Language Requirements
The requirements for those who do not have a degree for which English was the language of instruction at a recognized university are:
An overall score of at least 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); OR
A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 or above for the Internet-based test or 550 or above for the paper-based test.
All English language test scores are considered valid for two years after the date of the test.
