What will I learn?

Candidates for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy will be expected to meet the standard for the relevant broad field of learning defined for awards at level 10 on the NFQ.

Learning outcomes at this level relate to the discovery and development of new knowledge and skills and delivering findings at the frontiers of knowledge and application. Further outcomes at this level relate to specialist skills and transferable skills required for managing, such as the abilities to critique and develop organizational structure and initiate change.
Normally, the minimum duration of studies leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy is 3 academic years from the date of admission to the register.

Entry requirements

For international students

Transfer from Masters Degree (Research)

Normally, admission to the Doctoral Register is confined to candidates who have been admitted at least 12 months previously to the Master's Register and whose transfer to the Doctoral register is recommended by the candidate's Supervisor(s) and the relevant Department. All transfer proposals will be subject to an independent evaluation by an expert in the proposed field of study.

Direct Admission to Doctoral Register

Candidates with an approved professional qualification and an exceptional level of experience and work achievement may also be considered for direct admission to the Doctoral Register.
Council may directly admit to the Doctoral Register a candidate with a relevant Masters Degree through research or honours taught Masters Degree from a recognised Degree awarding body. The Council may obtain an External Expert's opinion on the applicant's Masters Degree.
Save under the circumstances which may be the subject of assessment and recommendation by an External Expert appointed by the Council in which the nature of the work proposed, and the applicant's academic achievement and personal qualities are such as to merit direct progression from Bachelor Degree to Doctoral candidate status. In any such case the applicant will be required to hold a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours in a related subject and to show substantial reason for not registering for a Master's Degree in the first instance.
