What will I learn?

In the first year you will be introduced to the 4 areas of communication: Media, Branding & Activation, Reputation and Relations, Content & Creation. You will discover your talents and specialize and deepen your knowledge and skills in the later years where also an international internship will take place. In your senior year, you will work on your individual capstone project.

Together with your teachers, peers and managers of external companies, you discover what you need to know and how you will be able to gain le a deep understanding of what your talents are. You start building your resume with relevant experiences from the very first moment of your student career with us. We offer you not only theoretical knowhow but also practical skills to be successful.

Other than field specific aspects we will teach you practical 21st century skills that are important in everyone's career. Such as:

  • Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Examination and inquiry
  • Critical thinking and reasoning
  • Creativity
  • Creative writing

The first year

In the first year you will get a wide scope on the field of communication. Each study period is focused on a particular theme in which students work on projects for real clients and companies. Each period has its own theme:

  • Media
  • Branding and Activation
  • Reputations and Relations
  • Content and Creation

We work on practical assignments and provide you with the tools, insights and hands-on experience to manage a range of professional processes. After the first year you will understand the terminology and can work towards specialising in parts of the field of communication that suit you best.

The second year

In second year your focus will become more and more clear. Half of the year is spent working as an intern in a company in the Netherlands or abroad. Your internship is a way to find out where your ambition lies. Or specialize in the direction that you already knows fits you most.

The third year

The third year of study can best be described as a year of exploration and specialism. During one half of the year, students follow a minor. These 6 months allow students to augment their study program with subjects that are offered at other universities. Students can opt for a minor offered within Fontys as a whole, a minor offered by a university in the Netherlands, or a minor offered by one of our thirty-five partner universities abroad. We have established partnership agreements with universities from several countries. The other 6 months you choose several interesting modules to suit your specialism for instance Business, Creativity or Strategy.

The fourth year

In your senior year you and your team of students will work as a senior advisor in your very own communication agency. You will fulfil briefs for a number of clients. And you will write a so called 'trending topic'. With your individual assignment for a business of choice you will show your skills as a communication manager. And prove to be ready for the next step in your career.

Career opportunities

The world around us is changing rapidly. Staying internationally competitive is more challenging today than ever before. The roles a communication manager can fulfil are plentiful and divers. You could be the future connector who bridges the gap between specialists from around the world. Or the change maker that thinks of new visionary strategies for international operating organisations.
