What will I learn?

The Faculty of Science and Engineering harbours a kaleidoscope of disciplines and research strengths. Our programmes in research (and education) range from nanomaterials and biomachinery to astronomy, from mathematics to pharmacy, from neurosciences to computer science, and from molecular and evolutionary biology to marine biology.

Our researchers pursue fundamental key questions while collaborating with partners from industry, the medical world and other realms of society. Frontline research groups explore new fields such as synthetic biology and sustainable energy use.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have Research Master degree or equivalent. Applicants with other research master degrees will be considered if sufficiently related to the research programme; Fluent in English (written and spoken).

For international students

PhD candidates who meet the following admission requirements are directly admitted:

an internationally recognized Master’s degree in the relevant field. At least two of the three databases (Nuffic (Dutch), Naric (British), AEI (Australian)) have to assess the level of the degree in question as equivalent to a European or Australian degree
grades that demonstrate mastery of the subject material in the field of specialization

Accepted proof of English proficiency

an overall score of 6.5 or higher on the IELTS (Academic version)

a score of at least 580 on the paper-based form of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

a score of at least 237 on the computer-based form of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

a score of at least 92 on the internet-based test of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
