The Master’s of Business Development and Entrepreneurship provides the analytical tools and skills for new business development in established and new organizations. The programme provides both the scientific knowledge and the practical skills needed for the identification and exploitation of new opportunities, while creating new value and well-being for all stakeholders. The focus is on venture development, as well as on entrepreneurial marketing using co-creation with customers and design thinking. In addition, there is strong emphasis on obtaining and managing (venture) capital.

The MSc in Business Development and Entrepreneurship trains you to become an expert in creating an environment in which new ventures can take hold and flourish. This expertise is highly sought after in business development functions (including innovation, marketing and finance) in large (multinational) corporations. The same applies in entrepreneurial teams, start-ups and various other economic development functions.

Programme Objective

The Master’s programme in Business Development and Entrepreneurship prepares professionals to create new value in an uncertain future. The programme is focused on delivering tools, skills and techniques to recognize and develop new opportunities, within established organizations as well as start-ups. The programme specifically focuses on these key components:

  • Market analysis and empirical techniques for such analysis, including customer development.
  • Strategy creation. Special attention is paid to the launch of new products and services.
  • Organizing and managing fast-growing corporations and corporate units, internally as well as in value-creating networks.
  • Financing new ventures, especially in a corporate environment.

You will actively participate in major research projects, conduct your own research, present your results, and write short essays and a major thesis. By the end of this programme at Utrecht University you will be able to:

  • put academic knowledge and skills into practice;
  • solve business and societal problems independently and in teams;
  • create a context in which new ventures emerge and flourish;
  • manage your own personal and professional development.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

MSc Track: Knowledge/ competence in the field of European law and a bachelor degree in Economics or sufficient knowledge of economics including knowledge/competence in the fields of: Microeconomics; Mathematics; Industrial organization and Competition Policy; Corporate Finance; Econometrics or Advanced Statistics. English language requirements: IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 7.0 overall band, at least 6.0 for all components. TOEFL, iBT. Minimum score: 96, at least 23 for writing and 20 for the other sections. Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, at least a B grade. Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, at least a C grade.

For international students

A BSc in Economics or Economics and Business Economics preferably with some degree of specialisation in Business Development and Entrepreneurship. The International Office assesses all international credentials according to the credential evaluation criteria of the Nuffic (the Netherlands Organisation for international cooperation in Higher Education), and advises the Admissions Committee on this subject.; and

A good command of English. Check the specific English proficiency requirements below.

If you have another university Bachelor’s degree you must have knowledge in the following fields:

  • Principles of Microeconomics
  • Mathematics
  • Principles of Macroeconomics
  • Principles of Corporate Finance
  • Econometrics

Other English language requirements: Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, at least a B grade; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, at least a C grade.
