How can mental health problems such as depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and grieving problems best be studied and treated? How can we prevent it from occurring, improve treatment results and prevent relapse?
These and similar kinds of questions you will address in the Master’s programme Clinical Psychology. You will acquire and develop fundamental knowledge and skills in evidence-based psychotherapies and become familiar with the research methods in the field of clinical psychology.
Driven by research and clinical experience
The lecturers from this Master’s programme work in clinical practice and/or do state-of-the-art theoretical or applied research at Utrecht University. This integration of science and practice feeds the teaching approach.
Learn to work in a multi/disciplinary way
Clinical psychology is always interacting with other disciplines due to the context in which behavioral and health problems arise. Examples are medicine, biology, neurology, pharmacology, economics, sociology and social psychology. This will therefore be a considerable focus of attention. Some lectures will also be taught by (guest) lecturers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. And finally, you will often work in a multi-disciplinary context during your internship as well.
Objective of the programme
This programme will enable you to develop into an academic professional. You have broad knowledge of contemporary scientific theories and instruments as well as skills related to prevention, psychotherapeutic treatment and policy formation in the area of psychological aspects of health, illness and psychopathology. You are familiar with research methods from mental healthcare and can translate that knowledge to practice. You know what it’s like to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
After completing this Master’s programme, you will fulfill the requirements to become a basic psychologist (Dutch Association of Psychologists (NIP)). This gives our Dutch students an excellent starting position in a junior level job. For our international students, the programme prepares you either for a fine career in or outside academia. Your career prospects are partly determined by your specialisation and which country you want to pursue your career.

Graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, including the Utrecht University Clinical and Health Psychology/Clinical Psychology individual course programme (or including the following courses ‘Psychopathologie II’,’ Diagnostiek in de klinische en gezondheidspsychologie’, ‘Basisvaardigheden professionele gespreksvoering voor psychologen in opleiding’), will in principle be admitted.
Other English language requirements: Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, at least a B grade; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, at least a C grade.
