How do socialisation contexts influence the development of children and adolescents?

Why is it that young males in particular tend to get involved in crime? Is it because they have the "wrong" friends? Were they not socialised properly? Is it due to dispositional factors? Are there hereditary factors at work?

From the day a child is born, his family and the culture in which he’s raised have a huge impact on his socioemotional development and psychological adjustment. As he grows up, his school and networks of friends and peers become more and more influential in his development. The two-year Master’s programme in Development and Socialisation in Childhood and Adolescence (DaSCA) gives you the theoretical and methodological background to analyse this development.

NORMAL AND ABNORMAL SOCIOEMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The programme focuses on both normal and abnormal development processes. Explicit attention is given to the study of interventions and risk factors in children’s and adolescent’s cognitive and social-emotional development and adjustment. Working through the course topics, you’ll address questions such as:

What are the early markers of development that has gone awry?

How can we improve the way negative outcomes in children and adolescents' are prevented or treated?

This Master’s programme combines advanced coursework with the development of hands-on skills.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVE

The Master’s programme in Development and Socialisation in Childhood and Adolescence is designed as preparation for a PhD position. By starting the programme with the foundation of a Bachelor’s degree in (developmental) psychology, pedagogy, or interdisciplinary social sciences, you’ll develop into a qualified researcher with excellent job perspectives. The programme is strongly driven by research, and your lecturers and supervisors will be members of the four interdisciplinary research groups in the research priority Child and Adolescent Studies (CAS).

Careers:

The programme is designed as preparation for PhD studies. However, it also provides training for students who wish to pursue a professional career as a researcher outside of a university setting.

What does your job involve?

As a PhD student you will conduct four years of research at a university in the Netherlands or abroad, writing scientific publications and working as a teacher for Bachelor’s and Master’s students. After you obtain your degree, you can apply for a research function.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants will be considered for admission to the Research Master’s programme in Religious Studies if you can demonstrate the following knowledge, insight, and skills: A relevant Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in the humanities or in one of the social sciences; Proven interest in Religious Studies, as evidenced in a minimum of 30 EC in a relevant field at the Bachelor’s level; Knowledge of basic concepts in Religious Studies and insight into relevant methods; A high standard of academic achievement, as evidenced in an overall grade point average and a Bachelor’s thesis grade equaling “good” or better in the applicable national system. (Typically, Dutch grade 7.5; US grade B; ECTS grade C.) English language requirements: ELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing. TOEFL, iBT. Minimum score: 93 with at least 24 reading, 22 listening, 20 speaking, 17 writing (internet-based test), institutional scores are not accepted. Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, at least a B grade. Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, at least a C grade.

For international students

Applicants must hold an academic Bachelor’s degree in Social or Behavioural Sciences (for instance Interdisciplinary Social Science, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Pedagogy, or Psychology) that equals the level of the Dutch equivalent. Equivalency will be decided by the programme's Admissions Committee.

Grade Point Average

Students with a GPA of 3.4 (or the Dutch equivalent of 7.5) or higher are eligible. Students with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.4 (Dutch equivalent: 7 or better) may be eligible and will have a chance of being selected if their previous studies fit well with the Development and Socialisation in Childhood and Adolesence programme, according to the programme’s Admissions Committee.

Other English language requirements: Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, at least a B grade; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, at least a C grade.
