What will I learn?

Make a difference in health care

In the Master’s in Epidemiology programme, you will examine the distribution and determinants of health and morbidity in specific populations. With evidence-based medicine setting new standards, specialists are needed for the design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation of epidemiological and health research. This scientific discipline is increasingly in demand in clinical research (human, pharmaceutical, and veterinary), industry, and policymaking.

This programme is an excellent option if you have a strong interest in applied medical or biomedical research – as well as human or veterinary medicine. A degree in biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, medicine, or veterinary medicine (or equivalent fields) will help you succeed in this challenging programme.

Programme objective

In all variants of the Epidemiology programme, you will learn to operate as an epidemiologist and clinical researcher. In the Utrecht variant, you can choose your specialisation such as Clinical Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases Epidemiology, Pharmacoepidemiology, Medical Statistics, Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology, and Veterinary Epidemiology. In the online option, you can select from the Clinical Epidemiology, Veterinary Epidemiology, or General Epidemiology for your specialisation.

During the programme, you will explore the field of epidemiology through six months of intensive coursework. This coursework will include basic epidemiology and statistical courses as well as advanced courses in your chosen specialisation. You will also have the opportunity to enhance and broaden your knowledge through additional topic-specific courses, such as Genetic Epidemiology and Cardiovascular Epidemiology.
