What will I learn?

Are you interested in analysing and solving financial problems in investment and business? Are you compelled by the ways in which sustainability issues are changing our understanding of the concept of finance? Do you want to know more about the interdependence between finance and sustainability? Then the specialisation in Sustainable Finance could be right for you. As part of the master's programme in International Business, the specialisation combines finance with the principles of sustainability: environment, society and governance.

Often for corporations and financial institutions ‘duty’ is less important than ‘profit’. The Sustainable Finance programme reverses this dynamic, focusing instead on the application of sustainability principles to management, corporate strategy, accounting, reporting, and marketing. Included in this are issues such as sustainable banking, investing, real estate, and micro-credit. Sustainable Finance will equip you to pair sustainability with profitability now in into the future.

Maastricht University’s School of Business and Economics (SBE) is the world leader in sustainable finance, internationally recognised for cutting-edge research in the field long before it landed on the agenda of America’s Ivy League schools and other European institutions. The Finance Department also founded two leading institutes for sustainable finance research: the European Centre for Corporate Engagement (ECCE) and the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB). These institutes collaborate with pension funds, rating agencies, corporations, and regulators to conduct research and develop tools that matter to practitioners.

Sustainability is no longer a luxury or a niche topic: it is rapidly becoming central to all government, social, and business decisions. Recognising this reality means that Sustainable Finance might be for you. You should have a strong awareness of your duty to society and your place in the business world and be able to bridge the apparent contradictions between these two. Of course you should also be interested in analysing and solving financial, investment, and business problems within the context of environmental, social, and governmental sustainability.

Your future

Now that sustainability has become indispensable to financial institutions, corporations, and regulators, there is an urgent need for experts in both finance and sustainability. As part of the new generation of finance practitioners, your career potential will be excellent. You’ll be qualified to work in all the same companies as finance graduates, but with a competitive edge thanks to your advanced knowledge of sustainability issues and implementation. SBE has an excellent network of financial institutions and organisations and can give you a leg up into a sustainable finance job.

You will be qualified for many positions, including the following:

  • business consultant
  • financial analyst
  • financial manager
  • investment portfolio manager
