MSc in Molecular Sciences - Specialisation in Molecular Chemistry

What will I learn?

Molecular Chemistry is a creative science, where chemists synthesize molecules with new biological or physical properties to address scientific or societal challenges. Think of new catalytic conversions, lead compounds for future medicines or the next generation of conducting polymers. Working with chemical structures the possibilities are endless: in principle, every molecule can be made. The challenge is to adapt the 3D-structure to the desired properties and design an efficient synthesis method.

What will you learn?

The specialisation in Molecular Chemistry is a thorough programme at the heart of chemistry, covering all stages from molecule design to application. The Institute for Molecules and Materials hosts a large and internationally renowned cluster of molecular chemistry groups, where you will participate in challenging research projects. In your internships, you can conduct independent research, under personal guidance of a researcher. Not seldom this leads to a scientific publication with you as a co-author.

Career prospects

Master’s specialisation in Molecular Chemistry

Approximately 40% of our graduates take up a PhD position, either in Nijmegen or elsewhere in the world. Our research institutes, in particular the Institute for Molecules and Materials, have vacancies for PhD projects every year. The Molecular Chemistry graduates also find work as researchers, marketers and managers in the chemical industry, or in one of our spin-off companies. A small proportion will not work in science, but for instance as a policymaker at a governmental organisation such as NWO or STW.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

A completed Bachelor's degree in Philosophy or in a related discipline (in the latter case, students must have acquired at least 60 EC in Philosophical disciplines). The applicant must have a degree with merit or distinction or equivalent. Meaning: a student’s weighted grade-point average in Philosophy in the 2nd and 3rd year of their Bachelor's programme must be the equivalent of 7.5 or more (on the Dutch scale of 10). A TOEFL iBT or 100 overall, with subscores of 22; An IELTS score of 7.0, with subscores of 6.5; A Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 proficiency, with marks of C or higher.

For international students

A completed Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Science or related area

In general, you are admitted with the equivalent of a Dutch Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, or a related programme in molecular science. In case of other pre-education, students must have passed preliminary examinations containing the subject matter in the admission criteria below (or equivalent literature). Any deficiencies in this matter should be eliminated before you can take part in a specialisation. An international degree has to be equivalent to a Dutch university diploma.

A proficiency in English

In order to take part in this programme, you need to have fluency in both written and spoken English. Non-native speakers of English* without a Dutch Bachelor's degree or VWO diploma need one of the following:

TOEFL iBT: ≥ 90 + subscores ≥ 22;
IELTS Academic: ≥ 6,5 overall + subscores ≥ 6,0 + writing subscore ≥ 6,5;
Cambridge certificate C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency: C or higher.

Application Deadline: Non-EU/EEA students - 1 April; EU/EEA students - 1 May (recommended deadline for assistance with finding housing) and 1 July (final application deadline).
