What will I learn?

In this programme, you will gain theoretical insights and practical skills in both formal and informal educational practices. Your science discipline will be put in a broader societal perspective, and you will develop your own views on how your discipline should be relevant to secondary education and to the public at large. The internships and the research project in science education and communication will support you to develop as a skillful practitioner as well as an innovator.

Specializations

After a joint first semester, you will specialise in one of the programme tracks:

  • Teacher Degree (in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science)
  • Research and Development in Science Education and Communication

NLT Qualification

Apart from being qualified as a teacher in chemistry, computer science, physics, and mathematics, you are also qualified to teach Nature, Life and Technology, after completion of this Master’s programme (Teacher Degree).

Career prospects:

The career prospects for our graduates are good. Approximately half of our students start a career as teacher. Others find a job as an educational researcher at a university, or they find a job in another setting in which they can transmit their science knowledge to others.

Getting started as a teacher

After completing the track Teacher Degree, you will be qualified as a teacher for one of the school subjects in both lower and upper secondary education. The employment prospects for teachers in science subjects are generally good, but there are differences between school subjects. There are many vacancies for teachers in chemistry, computer science, physics, and mathematics, and there are fewer opportunities for biology teachers.

Apart from being qualified as a teacher in chemistry, computer science, physics, and mathematics, you are also qualified to teach Nature, Life and Technology, after completion of this master’s programme.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants will be considered for admission to the Research Master’s programme in Religious Studies if you can demonstrate the following knowledge, insight, and skills: A relevant Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in the humanities or in one of the social sciences; Proven interest in Religious Studies, as evidenced in a minimum of 30 EC in a relevant field at the Bachelor’s level; Knowledge of basic concepts in Religious Studies and insight into relevant methods; A high standard of academic achievement, as evidenced in an overall grade point average and a Bachelor’s thesis grade equaling “good” or better in the applicable national system. (Typically, Dutch grade 7.5; US grade B; ECTS grade C.) English language requirements: ELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing. TOEFL, iBT. Minimum score: 93 with at least 24 reading, 22 listening, 20 speaking, 17 writing (internet-based test), institutional scores are not accepted. Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, at least a B grade. Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, at least a C grade.

For international students

The programme Science Education and Communication is open to students with a Bachelor's degree (BSc) with a major emphasis on one of the natural sciences, mathematics or computer science. In addition, the successful candidate will have a strong interest in both the theories and the practices of Science Education and Communication, and will avail of social and communicative competencies at a sufficient level to grow into a Science Education and Communication professional.

In order to qualify for a teacher qualification within the programme, there are additional content requirements. Bachelor degrees that satisfy these requirements are:

  • BSc degree in Biology (biology teacher)
  • BSc degree in Chemistry (chemistry teacher)
  • BSc degree in Physics (physics teacher)
  • BSC degree in Mathematics (mathematics teacher)
  • BSc degree in Computer Science (computer science teacher)

Other English language requirements: Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, at least a B grade; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, at least a C grade.
