This qualification is designed for those people who already have a degree qualification but need advanced highways related training. The principle aim is to provide the highway engineering industry with a programme at undergraduate level which will equip candidates with the technical and management skills to function at middle management level. This qualification is delivered in partnership with the New Zealand Institute of Highway Technology.

Graduates will be able to:

  • Apply advanced technical knowledge in a highway design or construction environment.
  • Innovatively apply and modify practices in the field of highway engineering.
  • Creatively plan, design, control, budget and prioritise highway construction and maintenance programmes to standards required by the engineering profession.
  • Provide managerial input into highway engineering projects and activities.
  • Implement and complete projects without direct supervision.
  • Undertake a wide range of support activities, including organization, management, liaison and public relations.
  • Analyse and evaluate technical and economic options.
  • Display substantial personal and professional communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Exercise responsibility for the work of others, including cost effective allocation of resources.
  • Maintain individual quality standards.
  • Continue studies towards higher professional or managerial qualifications.

Entry requirement for international students

  • Degree (e.g. engineering, science, geology or similar) or higher tertiary engineering qualification; or
  • Equivalent knowledge, skills, work experience or study.

Students must also meet the English language proficiency requirements as below:

  • IELTS Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5
  • TOEFL (pBT) score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
  • TOEFL (iBT) score of 60 (with a writing score of 18)
  • Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First, or B2 First for schools, or C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill
  • OET: Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42
  • NZCEL Level 4 Academic
  • LanguageCert - C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
