What will I learn?

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree is a one-year, research-only master’s degree. It's enables you to expand your research capabilities by focusing on a particular area of interest, under the supervision of AUT's expert academic staff. It can provide a pathway to more advanced research at doctoral level.

What you study

You complete an original thesis during this year of study.

AUT staff are available to supervise MPhil research on a wide range of topics.

Entry requirements

For international students

Must have completed one of the following with the equivalent of a B grade average or higher:

  • Four-year bachelor’s degree OR
  • Bachelor’s honours degree OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience relevant to the proposed programme of research

An interview may be required for particular research areas.

English Language requirements:

IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with all bands 6.0 or higher; or equivalent; TOEFL iBT score of 90; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with A grade; AUT Academic English with B+ grade; CAE minimum overall score of 176; PTE minimum overall score of 58.
