Summary

The New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) Level 3 covers a wide range of speaking, reading, writing and listening skills to give students skills to communicate in most situations with some independence and fluency. This is in order to participate in everyday and academic English language contexts. This course is ideal for students who wish to pursue further education in an English language setting. The course is equivalent to CEFR B1 and graduates are expected to complete the course with an English level equivalent to IELTS 5.0 to 5.5. The course is divided into four components: reading, writing, listening and speaking, which are taught at the same time through a variety of topics.

Course Delivery

The certificate has 60 credits and is delivered over 16 weeks with a one week break. The majority of lessons are delivered in the classroom and include a variety of activities such as practical tasks, class outings, writing workshops, assignments, research, and presentations. Students are also expected to complete 17 hours of independent study each week.

Study Pathway

NZCEL Level 3 meets the required English language proficiency requirements to enter most New Zealand Level 3 and 4 certificate programmes. NZCEL Level 3 also leads to NZCEL Level 4.

Entry requirement for international students

Students may be admitted to this programme:

  • providing they are 14 years of age or older
  • upon completing the Entry Test or Internal Test, demonstrating their suitability for this level, or upon completing the New Zealand Certificate Level 2.
