What will I learn?

This programme is designed for people with prior knowledge of hairstyling and colouring tasks and basic hair-cutting techniques, who wish to develop skills and knowledge to become a professional hairstylist.

You will graduate with the knowledge, skills, and attributes to provide integrated fashion services as a professional hairstylist and will have hands-on experience for real clients in an Auckland salon or in MIT's very own salon Hair at MIT.

Programme structure

You will need to complete the below eight courses (120 credits):

PERS4201 Professional stylist attributes (10 credits)

PERS4202 Sculpture (20 credits)

PERS4203 The art of advanced hair design (15 credits)

PERS4204 Reformation designs (15 credits)

PERS4205 Advanced colour design (20 credits)

PERS4206 Fashion colour and sculpture (15 credits)

PERS4207 Advanced client journey (15 credits)

PERS4208 Advanced Grand Finale (10 credits)

Further training or study

This qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Advanced Colouring Skills) (Level 5) and the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Advanced Cutting Skills) (Level 5).

Career opportunities

Graduates will have the knowledge and skills required to work independently as a professional hairstylist within a commercial environment under broad
guidance.

Entry requirements

Academic Requirements

New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3); or
an equivalent qualification.

IELTS test: Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14); Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill; OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36.
