Summary

The aim of this program is to develop professional, ethical and highly capable Healthcare Assistants who have a strong foundation of knowledge and practice. Students will become responsive to the changing needs of their clients, and be able to provide outstanding person-centred care under the leadership of a health professional.

Dementia Care Specialisation

A dementia care specialisation is available within this program.

Students will learn about the stages, symptoms and behaviours of clients living with dementia and how to respond to changes. Communication skills will be developed for dementia clients and their families/whānau.

Four dementia care unit standards are studied in substitute of four general program courses.
Students are required to be working or volunteering in a service supporting people living with dementia. This specialisation is studied through Blended Learning.

This qualification features a strong practical component to ensure students put their learning into practice.

Further study pathways

NZTC qualifications have been designed to link easily into each other, providing you with a flexible range of pathway options into higher level study.

Upon completion of the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3) you may be eligible to apply for New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Support) (Level 4). Entry criteria will apply.

Mode of learning

Online - Online is a flexible mode of learning that enables you to obtain an NZQA approved, high quality qualification without face-to-face attendance requirements. All study is conducted through NZTC’s unique online learning environment – NZTC Online.

Blended Learning - This mode of learning blends the flexibility of online learning with face-to-face learning and practical experience, including tutorials, block courses, supervised field practice and work experience.
