What will I learn?

Develop the skills to start your career in this vital global industry. Get basic maritime knowledge and skills and become familiar with shipping operations, shipboard practice and survival at sea. You will be prepared for a rewarding career in a global industry which has a continuous demand for well-trained and motivated people. You may find yourself working on a wide range of foreign-going ships from cruise liners, ferries and container vessels through to support vessels in the oil and gas industry. This programme combined with seatime and Maritime New Zealand requirements entitles you to apply for the electro-technical rating. You will gain the required knowledge, skills and experience for eventual seagoing employment as a rating on board commercial ships.

Entry requirements

For international students

Entry to this qualification is open but completion does not guarantee the award of a Maritime New Zealand license.

General

Applicants are required to complete Year 12 or equivalent of secondary school.

Entry requirements vary from country to country.

IELTS test: Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14); Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill; OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36.
