What will I learn?

This programme is for you if you are working in industry and want to progress to Mate Fishing Vessel or Watchkeeper Deck under 500 gross tonnage (GT). You will learn how to work safely onboard a commercial or fishing vessel and gain an understanding of navigational operations, compliance and legislative requirements, and emergency response procedures. Choose your strand. Study watchkeeping, fishing, or both. Watchkeeping strand: Study watchkeeping if you want to work onboard commercial vessels. Fishing strand: Study the fishing strand if you want to operate as a mate on 24–45 metre vessels, operating within coastal and offshore limits.

Entry to this qualification is open but completion does not guarantee the award of a Maritime New Zealand license.

General

Applicants are required to complete Year 12 or equivalent of secondary school.

Entry requirements vary from country to country.

IELTS test: Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14); Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill; OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
