What will I learn?

This is the ideal introduction if you’re interested in working in the social services, education or health sectors. The NZ Certificate in Study and Career Preparation [Level 4] programme is for those intending to pursue focused development in the skills, capabilities, knowledge and attributes needed to succeed at Level 4 or above.

The courses you choose will get your ready to apply for entry into a range of diploma and degree programmes in the fields of health (including nursing), social work (including mental health support) and teaching.

Outline

This qualification is for people intending to pursue focused development in the skills, capabilities, knowledge and attributes needed to succeed at higher levels including at degree level, within the context of a field of study or career pathway.

There are two career pathway options:

Te Hapai Hapori | Social Work or Teaching Pathway, for those wishing to pursue a career in teaching or social work
Hauora | Nursing / Health Pathway, for those wishing to pursue a career in nursing or other health professions

You will be prepared for further study in your chosen career pathway and upon graduating with this qualification you will be able to:

Locate, select and analyse relevant information from a variety of sources and apply to tasks and problems in your area of interest.
Work independently and collaboratively on academic tasks and problems.
Construct a reasoned and researched argument, communicated using a range of appropriate media.
Develop and critique a study and career plan that identifies specific long-term career goals.

Study Opportunities

Upon completion of this qualification you will have the skills, capabilities, knowledge and attributes needed to succeed at higher levels including at degree level, within the context of a field of study or career pathway. There are two career pathway options:

  • Te Hapai Hapori | Social Work Pathway – Bachelor of Social Work or another degree or diploma related to social work or working within communities.
  • Te Hapai Hapori | Teaching Pathway – Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education), Bachelor of Teaching (Primary), or another degree or diploma related to education.
  • Hauora | Nursing / Health Pathway – Bachelor of Nursing or another degree or diploma related to health.

Entry requirements

For international students

Achievement of NCEA Level 2 with a minimum of 10 credits from literacy-rich subjects, OR

NZ Certificate in Study and Career Preparation [Level 3], OR

You may be asked to provide evidence of a level of literacy and numeracy sufficient to:

  • be able to study at this level, and
  • interpret and apply health and safety requirements.

Applicants must supply a personal statement about their background, reasons for wanting to undertake the programme, and any factors that could impact on their study.

Computer literacy is highly recommended in order to be able to cope with the digital components of the courses. Student guidance and further details are provided in the application and enrolment information.

English Language Entry Requirement

All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English Language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. English Language fluency can be verified by achievement of one of the following within the last two years:

• New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 (Applied)
• IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0
• PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
• International equivalents to IELTS accepted by NZQA or successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply)
