What will I learn?

The Chinese Language curriculum consists of Chinese language and linguistics, and Chinese-English translation. Students study many topics, among which are an introduction to the Chinese language; the phonology, grammar, and lexicology of Chinese; the evolution of Chinese; Classical Chinese; the writing-system of Chinese characters; the semantics of Chinese; the rhetoric and pragmatics of Chinese language; and Chinese dialects.

Career Prospects

Chinese Studies Department provides training in diverse areas of Chinese Studies and Chinese Language, with the aim of preparing students for employment in a wide range of sectors. Graduates are offered career opportunities as professionals in the educational and business sectors, academia, the translation service industry and the mass media.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants should have completed a high school. English Language Requirements: EL1119 minimum acceptable score C6; IELTS - 6.5 overall with 6.5 in Reading and Writing components; MUET-200; TOEFL - 580 for paper-based / 92-93 for internet-based.

For international students

Students intending to read Chinese Studies and/or Chinese Language must fulfil any of the following:

A Level:

have passed Chinese Language and Literature (H3CLL) at G.C.E. “A” Level Examination (grades A-E); or
have passed Chinese Language and Literature (H2CLL) at G.C.E “A” Level Examination (grades A-E); or
have passed Chinese Language (H1CL) at G.C.E “A” Level Examination (grades A-C); or
have passed Higher Chinese (HCL or CL1) at advanced level at the GCE "A" Level Examination (grades A-E); or
have passed Chinese (CL or CL2) at advanced level at the GCE "A" Level Examination (grades A-E ); or
have passed Chinese (CL or CL2) at ordinary level at the GCE "A" Level Examination (grades 1-4); or

O Level: have passed Higher Chinese (HCL or CL1) at the GCE "O" Level Examination (grades 1-4); or

Diploma: Diploma of Chinese Studies for Polytechnic Certificate. Equivalent qualifications may also be accepted, such as Chinese read at Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), PRC National College Entrance Examination (gao kao), etc. These requirements also apply to students who intend to read modules as their non-major or breadth modules.

English Language Requirement: Applicants may present any of the following to fulfill the English Language requirement: IELTS - 6.5 overall with 6.5 in Reading and Writing components; MUET – 200; TOEFL - 580 for paper-based / 92-93 for internet-based; EL1119 - C6.
