Overview

TMC Academy, located in Singapore, was founded in 1981. It’s now a well-respected private education provider that aims to teach students well and prepare them effectively for the world beyond the Academy.  TMC was one of the first six private education institutions (PEIs) to receive the four-year EduTrust Certification by the Committee for Private Education (CPE) in 2010. It has firmly created a reputation for itself as a great study option in beautiful Singapore.

Students enrolled at TMC can enjoy a wide range of programmes and courses, including diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, and master’s degrees. Teaching at the university is flexible, forward-thinking and industry-relevant, and this is a college focused not just on delivering academic information to students but on preparing them for success in their fields after graduation.

The values of TMC are innovation, equality, and collaboration. Every person matters and every person can contribute something important to a class/research project/conversation if given a chance. So, every person is treated with respect, encouraged, and supported. The connected culture at TMC shows these values in action, as students and staff work very well together, giving and getting respect and bonding to create a better learning experience.

In terms of facilities on campus, TMC has everything a student could need. Though the campus isn’t huge, there are still lots of study and relaxation spaces to enjoy. Plus, TMC is in beautiful, busy Singapore, so the facilities off campus are also amazing.

International students who come to Singapore to study at the university love the friendly, welcoming locals and the unique natural city environment. They also benefit from lots of support services at every stage, from finding housing to fixing academic issues to getting career guidance pre-graduation. Nobody is as well-cared-for as the students at TMC, and the cheerful energy of Singapore doesn’t stop at the classroom door.

Teaching Quality

The teaching quality at TMC is amazing across all programmes of study. Tutors and lecturers are committed to their teaching work, proud to be creating the next generation of industry leaders and innovative creators. To keep up high-quality teaching in every subject area, lecturers stick to a personal, effective, and dedicated approach.

They understand student needs, involve students in active learning and make themselves accessible for student questions and queries by providing contact details. They are always on time. They provide useful, detailed feedback. They make every student in their classes feel heard and respected.

At the centre of everything that TMC faculty members do for their students is a real love for the work. Lecturers want to see TMC students succeed in life, and they provide quality teaching all the time to help make that happen.

TMC has won multiple awards that show its dedication to a high standard of education. For example, the college was a Winner in Higher Education – Psychology & Counselling at the yearly JobsCentral Learning Training and Development Awards (which praise great learning practices at private institutions). This marked the third time that TMC has won the award in the psychology category. It also won the Best Private Education for Hospitality and Tourism award in 2018.

Entry Requirements

There are certain university entry requirements that TMC applicants must meet to be considered for admission. The entry requirements needed to get into a programme usually change between courses and degree levels, so students should check their chosen programme to make sure they meet these requirements. There are also some generally applicable university requirements though.

Undergraduate applicants to bachelor’s top-up programmes offered in collaboration with the University of Northampton and Birmingham City University (both in the UK) need a relevant BTEC Level 5/the equivalent and an advanced or higher diploma in a relevant or similar subject/the equivalent. They also need the means to cover tuition fees and a minimum level of English language proficiency.

Postgraduate applicants and diploma applicants must meet similar requirements, but instead of the education level explained above, postgraduates will need previous university qualifications. This would usually be a minimum of a bachelor’s degree with first or second-class honours in a relevant subject.

English Score Required

The teaching language and assessment language at TMC is English. The institution is in Singapore, but many of its courses are presented in partnership with UK universities/awarding bodies. Because TMC’s language is English, every student approved for admission will need to prove they can speak English to the right standard if it isn’t their first language. If they can’t offer proof of English proficiency when they apply, they’ll have to take the TMC English Placement Test and pass it to confirm their place.

Several types of English proficiency proof are accepted by TMC, including at least a C6 at GCE O English or the completion of a diploma taught and assessed in English. One of the most common proficiency tests is the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

The minimum overall band score required in the IELTS for admission will change between courses and study levels. For a bachelor’s degree applicant, an overall band score of at least 6 is required. For a master’s degree, required scores can vary, usually between 6, 6.5 and 7. TMC offers a preparatory course for the IELTS that will help students have their best chance at succeeding in the test and becoming eligible for enrolment.

Admission

TMC’s international university admission process begins when a student decides which course they’d like to study, makes sure they meet the course’s specific entry requirements and completes some pre-course counselling. This pre-course counselling process is simple. The student gets some standard information about TMC, their programme of studies, their fees, universities policies and more, and all of it allows them to confirm for sure that they’d like to apply.

Next, a student admission application will be filled out online. An international applicant will apply for a student pass and submit all the right admission documents, including a passport/another form of ID, academic transcripts from their home country and proof of English proficiency. There will be an application fee of SGD 400.

Once the application is submitted, students can check its status online for updates. The admission team will consider every application individually, and if accepted into TMC, students will then need to sign the Acceptance section in the Letter of Offer from the institution to complete their enrolment.

At this stage, it will be time to arrange things like accommodation, airport pickup, the course contract, and the tuition fees for semester one. For international students, the cost of tuition will usually be higher, though still very reasonable.

Students can view the entire admission process in full detail on the TMC website, including bonus advice and information for students in specific areas. Students can also find course-specific admission information on the same site.

Scholarships & Funding

Funding a degree programme isn’t easy for students, especially international students, and TMC understands this. That’s why it’s so focused on helping deserving, academically talented students reduce their fees, offering a number of university scholarships, awards and bursaries. Impressive effort is recognised at TMC, and support is given where it’s needed.

One of the best scholarships at TMC is called the TMC Outstanding Student Award. It’s an award given to the top students on each TMC-managed programme (not valid for partner programmes with other universities) based on their exam results. Terms and conditions apply, and the full award amount can change, but details are available directly from TMC.

Awards are also given to students in the Preparatory Course for GCE O Level Examination. If they do extremely well in this exam, they can be offered a full scholarship for a TMC diploma or higher diploma programme.

TMC’s academic merit financial rewards are important to the university as they motivate all students to do well, and they thank hard-working students for their effort. There are also financial aid options open to students experiencing financial hardship, but these will need to be discussed on a case-by-case basis with the university.

Accommodation

Students enrolled at TMC get the chance to experience student life in Singapore, a beautiful and exciting city that’s home for lots of students. There’s a free student accommodation placement service available to new TMC students in hostels and homestay sites across the city, which can really help international students who are trying to navigate housing and university accommodation in Singapore. This way, they won’t have to do anything without the support of TMC.

Requests for accommodation placement should be submitted at least two weeks before a student arrives, and the minimum rental period is three months. Students will have to commit to staying in a place for the full duration of their rental period, whatever it might be.

Students can also find a student house or apartment independently. This will usually be a shared apartment or house rather than a private residence for one student, as this is cheaper for everyone. For shared student accommodation, international applicants should expect a cost of around SGD 600 monthly, and they should also remember that sharing spaces can be a great way to make new friends in Singapore, creating connections to share the academic journey at TMC with.

Accommodation support is easy to access at TMC, and it’s something that lots of international students lean on when they’re applying and planning out their life in Singapore. No student at TMC ever needs to handle their housing without any help, advice, or guidance.

Student Support

TMC Academy knows how complicated it can be for students new to the country to begin university life in Singapore. Wanting to make the change as easy as possible, the institution offers lots of student support services to help everyone feel heard, safe and at home.

There’s a student support programme focused on orientation, which helps domestic and international students to settle into TMC and find their way around quickly. There are student support workshops that introduce international students to everything from the campus and the faculty to the culture and the city of Singapore. There’s never a moment where an overseas student, having arrived in the country, needs to feel lost or overwhelmed.

In terms of looking after students’ personal and academic wellbeing once they’re settled into their courses, TMC offers pastoral counselling as part of its long list of helpful student services. Pastoral counsellors become student guides, listening to personal, academic, and emotional issues and helping however they can. Appointments can cover everything from study stress to mental health worries and relationship difficulties.

Student support is always available at TMC, as this institution understands very well that a successful student is a happy student. Just as there are lots of courses and programmes to give students the freedom of choice they need, there are lots of student support options available to do the same (and to make sure a person always has a place to go with their question/concern/worry).
