La Trobe University was ranked among the QS Top 50 Under as one of the world’s fastest-rising young universities. The Business School is also ranked 50th in the world for hospitality and leisure management in QS World Rankings by Subject 2017.

This 1.5-year advanced standing programme provides students with the business management skills and knowledge needed to work in the rapidly growing tourism industry. It emphasises the application of theoretical knowledge and practical skill. Students will gain hands-on experience in western style food and beverage skills, using computer reservation systems commonly used in the industry and through computer simulation. Graduates typically work in large international companies, resorts, restaurants and hotel chains.

An exciting area of growth and innovation, a qualification in tourism and hospitality management provides you with the skills needed for hospitality and tourism supervision with business management skills and an understanding of the dynamics of the tourism industry.

This degree seeks to blend practical training with a broad education for the industry’s future leaders. Besides theories, students will also gain hands-on experience in western style food and beverage skills, using computer reservation systems commonly used in the industry – Opera and Galileo, and through computer simulation. You are also strongly encouraged to work in teams as well as develop your independent study skills.

Graduates typically work in large international companies, resorts, restaurants and hotel chains.

The programme is a fully accredited Australia undergraduate degree and generally qualifies graduates for consideration for admission to Masters by coursework in the following areas:

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students must have three GCE 'A' Level passes or minimum of 3 H2 level subjects with a pass or above. Advanced 1 – 16 Modules: An RMIT approved non-business diploma from any of the local polytechnics. Advanced 2 – 12 Modules: An RMIT approved relevant business diploma from SIM or any of the local polytechnics. Other qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the university. English Language Requirements: Applicants who have not achieved a minimum of C or better in General Paper at AS/H1 Level or Knowledge and Inquiry at H2 must provide evidence of at least ONE of the following: IELTS (Academic) - 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL - Paper-Based = 580 (TWE 4.5); TOEFL - internet-Based Test (iBT) = 92, with minimum of 20 in all sections; Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE(A) = 58 (no communication band less than 50); Cambridge English: (Advanced CAE) (up to 2014) = 58 with no less than 'borderline' in each skill; Cambridge English: (Advanced CAE) 2015 onwards: 176 with no less than 169 in any component; RMIT English Worldwide (REW) Advanced Plus or equivalent; Successful completion of a recognized approved Diploma qualification or higher, where the language of instruction was English. Have successfully studied Singapore Cambridge 'A' levels at a Singaporean high school for at least 2 years and met the academic entry criteria of 3 A/H2 level passes. Other equivalent qualifications approved by RMIT will be considered.

For international students

This is advanced standing programme. Applicants should have relevant polytechnic diploma or other diplomas approved by La Trobe University.

All other qualifications not listed will be considered by La Trobe University on a case-by-case basis.

English Language Requirements

  • A score of C or better in the General Paper in the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level); or
  • A grade of C or better in English Language in the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level); or
  • Evidence of successful completion of studies at secondary or tertiary level with English as the language of instruction; or
  • IELTS test score results of minimum of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0
  • Other equivalent International English qualifications as approved by La Trobe
