What will I learn?

Each year, we admit around 240 students into the LLB programmes at the Faculty of Law. Although most of the LLB students are Singaporeans, the programme is also open to international students.

The LLB degree is an honours degree. Students must complete a minimum total of 160 credits in four years.

Compulsory modules

The compulsory modules are taught during the first two years. One module is taught in the third or fourth year. We aim to

»give an understanding of the basic law modules and general principles;

»provide training in the basic skills essential for every lawyer, including analysis, research, writing, advocacy and problem-solving; and

»give an appreciation of the role of law and lawyers in their own society and in the global community to better equip a lawyer to deal with the challenges of globalization.

Elective modules

The elective modules are chosen by students in the third and fourth year from a broad and diverse range, allowing them to pursue their interest in a particular field of law. We aim to provide a liberal education through the medium of law that will allow students to maximize their potential to the fullest degree.

Students choose from many clusters, including Asian Legal Studies, Civil Law, Corporate & Financial Services Law, Intellectual Property & Technology Law, International & Comparative Law, International Arbitration & Dispute Resolution, Maritime Law, Law & Society, Private Law, Research and Skills.

Student Exchange Programme (SEP)

The SEP offers an excellent opportunity for students to spend either one or both semesters of their third year at a foreign university to study the laws of a foreign legal system up close. We have partnerships with leading law schools in Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States. More than one third of our third year students have the opportunity to participate in a SEP.

International Mooting Competitions

One of the most intense and valuable educational experiences a student can have is to represent NUS in an international competition. The Faculty of Law has an unparalleled track record in international mooting competitions.

Degree and Class of Honours

Successful completion of the LLB programme leads to the award of the following classes of degrees: First Class Honours, Second Class Honours (Upper Division and Lower Division), and Third Class Honours.
