As the world becomes ever more data-driven, analytical skills are in high demand but very short supply. Few companies are exploiting quantitative techniques to their full potential, often due to a lack of in-house expertise. By pursuing undergraduate level study in data science and business analytics, graduates will be highly sought-after by employers as the race to gain a competitive edge in the data arena intensifies. From asset management to pharmaceuticals, retail to insurance, the future is bright for any aspiring data scientist.
This degree will provide a broad introduction to the techniques and subject matter of applied statistics and machine learning to train students to perform independent data analysis. Students will be able to discuss which statistical methods are appropriate in a given situation as well as the merits and limitations of a particular method. They will be taught to demonstrate statistical software to analyse datasets and interpret the output, using a variety of algorithmic and model-based methods. It is important for graduates to learn to draw appropriate conclusions following empirical analysis and form the basis for managerial decision-making.
Students will have exposure to a mixture of R and SPSS in the three new statistics courses (ST2187, ST3188 and ST3189).
