What will I learn?

The BSc in Chemistry and Biological Chemistry programme is a four-year direct-honours programme emphasizing problem-solving, laboratory exercises, and project work.

Our curriculum meets the American Chemical Society (ACS) guidelines, ensuring that our students are qualified to be professional chemists or to enter graduate school in the chemical sciences. The programme begins with the fundamentals of modern chemistry, including organic and biological chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and forensic science. Students go on to study advanced and industrially-relevant topics including organ metallic chemistry, spectroscopy, green chemistry, and drug design. In each year of study, students have the opportunity to do a research project to hone their creativity and explore the frontiers of science.

Concentrations:

Medicinal Chemistry

In this concentration, students explore the interface between chemistry and biology, including exciting topics such as synthetic chemistry, molecular modeling, computational biology, structural genomics, and pharmacology. These courses are applicable to the design and discovery of new pharmaceuticals, and are very useful for students intending to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry.

Food Science and Technology

This concentration is intended for students interested in exploring the applications of chemistry in the food industry.

Career Prospects

In-depth knowledge of chemistry principles and methods is extremely useful in many areas of science and industry. Our Chemistry and Biological Chemistry programme equips students with the latest laboratory techniques, mastery of cutting-edge scientific instruments, as well as experience doing research at the scientific frontier and internship opportunities at a wide selection of local chemistry-related companies. Our graduates have been able to enter a wide range of fulfilling jobs, including research, technical, and managerial positions.
