What will I learn?

The Certificate in English Language for the Creative Arts is a two-level programme. The course is ideal preparation if you plan to study at LASALLE College of the Arts where the city campus is a vibrant place to develop your English skills.

The programme adds value to your English by helping you develop academic study skills combined with arts-specific language. On successful completion of the programme, your level will be higher than or equivalent to the IELTS score required for undergraduate programmes.

The teaching approach is student-centred and interactive, where you develop independent learning skills and reflective practices.

You also have the opportunity to learn more about the arts and local community in Singapore through going to performances, exhibitions and places of interest as well as taking part in a community outreach project.

Programme structure

Divided into two levels, you will enter the programme at a level which corresponds to your language ability and the undergraduate programme that you are offered. You can submit your IELTS or TOEFL score, or take the LASALLE placement test to determine your level of entry.

  • English 1 – Preliminary
  • English 2 – Communicator

Our comprehensive programme content includes the following:

  • General English
  • English for Academic Purposes
  • Study Skills
  • English Language for the Arts

Learning Methods

The Programme Team uses direct, communicative task-based activities to facilitate English language learning. Priority is placed on how English language is used for academic and practical situations with an emphasis on group and collaborative work. Below are examples of the type of activities you will experience:

  • You are directly involved in speaking and listening to English in everyday and academic situations. For example, when presenting a group project, the emphasis is on clarity of pronunciation and presentation of ideas.
  • Tasks help you develop reflective and problem-solving skills. For example, the class may visit a product design museum, where you read and research exhibited products. You then write a reflective journal to analyse and speculate on improvements to a chosen product.
  • Academic study skills and writing form a major part of the programme.

You develop your writing foundation before moving on to research and academic writing skill.
