What will I learn?

In order to engage industry in digital transformation and practice scholarship, the EngD’s objectives are:

  • To train Information and Communications Technology manpower with deeper technical skills to conduct industry-focused research & development.
  • To attract high-calibre professionals to conduct practice research with our faculty.
  • To build practice research into the identity and branding of SIS.

Upon completion of the professional doctorate training, graduates would be able to:

  • Apply deep tech knowledge in practical scenarios
  • Exercise critical ability and power to analyse problems
  • Develop tools and solutions that feature deep technology
  • Address problems of interest critical to industry partners
  • Engage in community-based learning for practice research
  • Adhere to and advocate high levels of research integrity and ethical standards for practice research outcomes

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have completed at least a good Bachelor’s degree. A Master’s degree is useful but not required. Good GRE or GMAT results.

For international students

Bachelor degree with good honours, or Master’s degree, in a relevant discipline

Minimum 3 years of work experience in the technological industry with vertical domains, with good understanding of industry problems

Good GMAT/GRE test score. Applicants from SMU, NTU, NUS and SUTD graduates are allowed to take the SMU Admissions Test in lieu of GMAT/GRE. SMU MITB, MAIS or MSc in Computing graduates with a minimum cGPA of 3.4/4.0 (within 5 years of graduation) will be exempted from the SMU Admission Test.

Good TOEFL (minimum of 90) or IELTS (minimum of 6.5) scores for applicants whose medium of instruction at the Bachelor's or Master's level was not in English.
