What will I learn?

The School of Art, Design and Media's doctoral programme provides creative research opportunities in a wide spectrum of academic areas. Students are expected and encouraged to develop innovative ways of thinking, and to experiment and create in a range of media. This programme also acts as an incubator for the development and realization of original artistic and professional productions, including design, interactive media, film, animation and new art forms.

Through exploration of new ideas, creative practices and theories, the expectation is that students will transform the field. A collaborative of internationally recognized faculty members, visiting artists and scholars, offers a unique educational environment of international quality. Creative and production cooperation between faculty and students is encouraged and the development of worldwide co-production opportunities is fostered.

Programme Structure

Option of Study

PhD students may opt for either options of study:

By research: submission of thesis of 80, 000 words; or

By research with a practical component: submission of thesis of 60, 000 words and the product of the practical component

Required Coursework

PhD students are required to fulfill the following coursework requirements by the 18th month of their candidature

6 graduate courses: To complete 6 graduate courses and attain a minimum of CGPA of 3.5. At least 3 of the courses must be taken at the School of Art, Design and Media while the remaining 3 courses could be taken at other Schools in NTU, subject to the approval by the respective supervisor;
2 mandatory courses: To complete and pass Graduate English (unless exempted) and Small Group Teaching. No academic units would be awarded for these 2 courses

Entry requirements

For international students

Master degree from a recognized institution which is relevant to the proposed disciplines or areas of research;

For applicants whose mother tongue is not English, a good IELTS score of at least 7.0 is required.
