What will I learn?

The Graduate Diploma in Social Work (GDSW) programme is for

persons holding degrees earned from reputable universities other than social work, currently working in social service sector and acquiring knowledge and skills of social work and would be qualified for accreditation as social worker after completion of GDSW;

persons holding degrees earned from reputable universities who are planning to switch their career into social work.

The objective is to train non-social work graduates to be competent social service professionals by providing professional knowledge and skills in:

  • Social work theory and practice;
  • Social service delivery systems; and
  • Specialised fields of social intervention.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants require a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline; or a Bachelor’s degree with a relevant Graduate Certificate with a minimum CAP of 3.00. English Language Requirements: TOEFL score is required: 85 for the internet-based test (with a minimum score of 22 for the writing section); or 580 for the paper-based test; or 237 for the computer-based test; an IELTS score of 6.0.

For international students

Applicants obtained either: a Bachelor's degree in Social Work; acceptable Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores (the University Code is 0677), taken no earlier than five years before the date of application (NUS/NTU/SMU graduates are not required to submit the GRE score); A NUS Bachelor's degree with Minor in Human Services; or Bachelor's degree with acceptable Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken no earlier than five years before the date of application (NUS/NTU/SMU graduates are not required to submit the GRE score) and at least one year of either work in the social services or voluntary social service experience; or other qualifications and experience subject to approval by the Board of Graduate Studies.
