What will I learn?

Students who undertake our graduate programmes, gain from the interdisciplinary backgrounds of our faculty and research-focused atmosphere. They are able to further their research in areas of their choice, through the various core and elective modules, the programme also allows students to benefit from the many research conferences, seminars and workshops, providing a platform for the exchange of research innovations, theories and ideologies with experts in the field and peers alike.

All graduate students are required to take the following research modules:

  • NM6102 - Research Methods in Communications & New Media
  • NM6770 - Graduate Research Seminar

Upgrading from MA to PhD

CNM students can apply to upgrade their candidacy from MA to PhD provided that they:

  • Achieve an ‘A’ average over four graduate modules (levels 5000 and 6000) within their first two successive semesters (for full-time students) and the first four successive semesters (for part-time students); and
  • Obtain the written agreement of a CNM faculty member who is willing to supervise them for their PhD. The written agreement can take the form of an email request to and reply from the faculty member, which is copied to the Graduate Coordinator and Head of Department.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants require a Bachelor’s degree with honours or equivalent, in a relevant discipline; or a Bachelor’s degree with a relevant Graduate Diploma/Graduate Certificate with a minimum CAP of 3.00. English Language Requirements: TOEFL score is required: 85 for the internet-based test (with a minimum score of 22 for the writing section); or 580 for the paper-based test; or 237 for the computer-based test; an IELTS score of 6.0.

For international students

Applicants with a good NUS Honours degree (second class and above) or an equivalent (e.g., a four-year Bachelors degree with at least an average grade of B or equivalent) are eligible to apply for the Master of Arts.

English Language Requirements: A minimum TOEFL score of 580 for the paper-based test or 237 for the computer-based test or 85 for the Internet-based test (with a minimum of 22 for the writing section); or IELTS result of 6.0 is required.
