What will I learn?

Comprising four taught modules and a 30,000 word thesis, the MA by Research in Theatre Studies offers students the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of the field, and to conduct innovative research into a specific aspect of it.

The maximum duration of study for both full-time and part-time study is 36 months. Those awarded an NUS scholarship are required to reside in Singapore during the duration of the scholarship award.

To obtain the degree of Master of Arts in Theatre Studies (Research), candidates will be required to:

  • successfully complete four modules, three of which must be at level 5000 or 6000.
  • In Theatre Studies, there are two compulsory modules: TS5101 (Text and Performance) and TS6770 (Graduate Research Seminar)
  • obtain a minimum Cumulative Average Point (CAP) of 3.00 for all examinable modules. The candidature of a student will be terminated if he/she:
  • obtains a CAP of less than 2.5 for two consecutive semesters, or less than 3.0 for three consecutive semesters; or
  • fails more than two modules
  • successfully complete a dissertation of not more than 30,000 words.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants require a Bachelor’s degree with honours or equivalent, in a relevant discipline; or a Bachelor’s degree with a relevant Graduate Diploma/Graduate Certificate with a minimum CAP of 3.00. English Language Requirements: TOEFL score is required: 85 for the internet-based test (with a minimum score of 22 for the writing section); or 580 for the paper-based test; or 237 for the computer-based test; an IELTS score of 6.0.

For international students

Students intending to read Master of Arts (Chinese Culture and Language) coursework programme must fulfill any of the following: An NUS Honours degree (Second Class and above) or equivalent (e.g., a four-year Bachelor’s degree with at least an average grade of B or equivalent) in the subject or related field; or A good Bachelor’s degree (at least an average grade of B or equivalent) in the subject or related field and successful completion of a placement test; or exceptionally; or Other qualifications and experience subject to approval by the Board of Graduate Studies.
