What will I learn?

The programme is intended to provide students with an advanced knowledge and understanding of the ‘state-of-the-art’ in one or more of the many areas of mechanical engineering. Its unique balance of rigorous fundamentals and engaging real-world applications in the Master of Science (Mechanical Engineering) programme trains the students to be analytical thinkers who will successfully integrate and synthesise theory and new knowledge. The combination of expertise in research and in engineering consultancy in the Mechanical Engineering Department helps to give this MSc (Mechanical Engineering) course its unique features. The success of this MSc (Mechanical Engineering) course can be measured by the large proportion of its graduates who find appropriate and challenging posts in industry at home and abroad.

A candidate may read for the MSc (Mechanical Engineering) with or without a major or area of specialisation. The specialisations available are:

  • Computation and Modelling
  • Advanced Manufacturing

Degree Requirements

The normal graduation requirements for the degree of M.Sc. include accumulating a total of no less than 40 Modular Credits (MCs) and obtaining a minimum Cumulative Average Point (CAP) of 3.0 (equivalent to the Grade of B-) for the best modules equivalent of 40 MCs (inclusive of foundation/core modules, where required). Each graduate module of 39 lecture hours is usually assigned 4 MCs.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants require a Bachelor’s degree with honours or equivalent, in a relevant discipline; or a Bachelor’s degree with a relevant Graduate Diploma/Graduate Certificate with a minimum CAP of 3.00. English Language Requirements: TOEFL score is required: 85 for the internet-based test (with a minimum score of 22 for the writing section); or 580 for the paper-based test; or 237 for the computer-based test; an IELTS score of 6.0.

For international students

At least a bachelor’s degree with honours or its equivalent. Candidates with other qualifications and achievements deemed to be suitably prepared for the programme of study may also be considered.

English Language Requirements: Minimum TOEFL score is required: 85 for the internet-based test (with a minimum score of 22 for the writing section); or 580 for the paper-based test; or 237 for the computer-based test. IELTS result of 6.0 is required.
