Objectives

The objectives of the Master of Social Work programme are:

  • To facilitate graduate exchange with top social work programmes overseas;
  • To meet projected manpower needs for specialist practice;
  • To produce practitioners who can be leaders in their field of specialization and serve as part-of a multi-disciplinary group of professionals in health, family and community development

From a pedagogical point of view, the programme aimed at developing specialist skill sets based on a specific knowledge base, will focus on building from the generic level in the undergraduate programme as well as to provide a wider option in the choice of modules. The Master of Social Work with a specialization focus will provide a rung in the hierarchy of knowledge and skills development for social work professionals.

Course Structure

There are three options for the Master of Social Work:

  • Master with Specialisation (Family/Community or Health);
  • General Master without Specialisation; and
  • Self designed Master without Specialisation.

Master of Social Work (without specialization)

Four Essential Modules:

  • SW5103 Family Systems Theory and Intervention;
  • SW5104 Management of Human Service Organizations;
  • SW5106 Social Policy and Welfare Services;
  • SW5107 Program Development and Evaluation.

Master of Social Work (with specialization)

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants require a Bachelor’s degree with honours or equivalent, in a relevant discipline; or a Bachelor’s degree with a relevant Graduate Diploma/Graduate Certificate with a minimum CAP of 3.00. English Language Requirements: TOEFL score is required: 85 for the internet-based test (with a minimum score of 22 for the writing section); or 580 for the paper-based test; or 237 for the computer-based test; an IELTS score of 6.0.

For international students

Candidates seeking admission to the course leading to the Master of Social Work degree must have obtained either: An NUS Honours degree (Honours (Merit) and above) or equivalent (e.g., a four-year Bachelor's degree with at least an average grade of B) in Social Work; good Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores (the University Code is 0677), taken no earlier than 5 years before the date of application (NUS/NTU/SMU graduates are not required to submit the GRE score); or An NUS Honours degree (Honours (Merit) and above) or equivalent (e.g., a four-year Bachelor's degree with at least an average grade of B) in related field; good Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores (the University Code is 0677), taken no earlier than 5 years before the date of application (NUS/NTU/SMU graduates are not required to submit the GRE score); and a minimum of five years of relevant work experience; or A good Bachelor's degree (at least an average grade of B or equivalent) and a NUS Graduate Diploma in Social Work with at least an average grade of B+; or A good Bachelor's degree (at least an average grade of B or equivalent) in Social Work; or A good Bachelor's degree (at least an average grade of B or equivalent) in related field; Other qualifications and experience subject to approval by the Board of Graduate Studies.
