What will I learn?

Programme aim

Nowadays, one can without hesitation, state that there is mathematics in virtually everything. There is mathematics behind mobile phones, cars and oil tankers. Internet is built on mathematics and Google is based on probability theory. Cryptology and secure data transfer are based on classical number theory.

New mathematical methods are necessary for understanding modern physics and chemistry, e.g. advanced mathematical and statistical models are required in climate science.

Bioinformatics has quickly grown to become one of the big areas of applied mathematics. A continuing development of mathematical methods is necessary in order to deal with the huge amounts of information generated by e.g. gene mapping.

Why apply

The Master's program provides a solid base in mathematics and/or mathematical statistics or computational science. It is also possible to choose a direction towards bioinformatics. We also offer a number of courses in financial mathematics.

On completion of the Master's program, you will be able to not only master a given area of engineering, but also take part in the development of mathematical models and algorithms.

Career

Up to date, roughly half of our ex-students have stayed in academia, i.e. as PhD students, in Sweden as well as abroad. Others have become employed in industry, for example in the automotive industry and the pharmaceutical industry or as consultants for industry.

Research connections

Research in mathematical sciences, in Sweden and elsewhere, is very intense. Mathematical research in on demand from an increasing number of sectors and at the same time mathematics continues to flourish as a research are in its own right.

These directions of research are not in opposition to each other. On the contrary, they enrich and inspire each other. It is a fact that many of the mathematical results that are of very concrete use today, were developed by pure mathematical curiosity, sometimes decades or even centuries ago.

Swedish mathematical research is by tradition strong. In particular this is true also for the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers and Gothenburg University. The Department is joint for the two universities, which helps to give it the size needed to create a stimulating environment, socially and scientifically.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

To fulfill the general entry requirement for the second cycle (master’s level), the prospective student must either hold a degree of Bachelor or Degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering (minimum 3 years/ 180 hp) in Science, Engineering, Technology or Architecture from an internationally recognized university, according to the official guidelines by the Swedish Council for Higher Education published at universityadmissions.se. Programme-specific requirements include a bachelor’s degree (or the equivalent) with a major in (one or several alternatives will be listed) and prerequisites (one or several courses selected as necessary for the specific programme) and for three particular programmes a portfolio is required. English language requirement: IELTS (academic training): 6.5 (with no part of the test below 5.5); TOEFL (Internet based): 90 (with a minimum of 22 on the written part); TOEFL (paper based): 575 (with a minimum of 4.5 on the written part); Pearson PTE Academic - Score of 62 (writing 61).

For international students

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a major in: Engineering Physics, Physics, Mathematics or an Engineering Discipline.

Prerequisites: Mathematics (at least 37.5 cr. including Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Multivariable Analysis, Mathematical Statistics) and experience with Mathematical Software.

Accepted tests and minimum results required: IELTS Academic: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5; TOEFL Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test, total score of 575, TOEFL Internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test, total score of 90; Pearson PTE Academic: Score of 62 (writing 61); C1 Advanced (CAE), Cambridge English: Advanced (Certificate in Advanced English), or Cambridge ESOL Level 2 Certificate in ESOL International, Level C1.
