In this project, we plan to investigate numerically and analytically interfacial dynamics of liquid films in the presence of additional complexities such as surfactants, evaporation and externally applied electric fields. Since the analysis of the full system of equations governing such two-phase flows is a formidable task, we plan to obtain an initial insight by investigating reduced-order model equations. We, therefore, plan to first derive such low-dimensional models (e.g., a long-wave, Benney-type model and a weighted-integral-boundary-layer model). The research may involve experimental component using state-of-the-art flow visualization tools as well as direct numerical simulations informed by the results for the reduced-order equations.
