What will I learn?

This level 2 science course is designed to develop basic science and laboratory skills and is an ideal entry point in gaining qualifications in applied science. The course is practical based with opportunities to improve GCSEs in science, English and maths. You will develop technical lab skills specifically linked to science-based employment. You will also enhance your skills in biology, chemistry and physics and gain experience of work. This course is for school leavers who are interested in pursuing a career in science, or for those who want to gain specialist hands-on experience to stand out to top universities.

All students study the following subjects:

GCSE Science (Biology, Chemisty, Physics and Controlled Assessment)
Extended Certificate in Applied Science (Biology, Chemistry and Maths)
Maths and/or English at the appropriate level (GCSE or Functional Skills)

This course is taught through a mixture of classes, lab practicals and project work. There are also some field trips and company visits. This course is partly exam and partly coursework based which includes assessed practicals. Students who successfully complete this course with a satisfactory grade, attitude and interview can apply to study the BTEC Level 390 Credit Diploma in Applied Science. You could work in science based industries, in careers such as laboratory work, school technicians, medical technicians and analysts.
