The A-Level Business course allows students to study business in a variety of contexts (e.g. large/small, UK focused/global, service/manufacturing) and explore the importance of decision making to improve the operational performance of a business. A-Level Business is a linear course: students will sit three exams papers at the end of their two years of study.

Paper 1 explores different types of business. It focuses on managers, leadership and decision making. Paper 1 is assessed through a two hour examination and consists of 100 marks worth 33.3% of the A-Level. There are three compulsory sections: Section A has 15 multiple choice questions (MCQs) worth 15 marks. Section B has short answer questions worth 35 marks. Sections C and D have two essay questions each worth 25 marks.

Paper 2 focuses on decision making to improve marketing performance, operational performance, financial performance and human resource management. Paper 2 is assessed through a two hour examination and is out of 100 marks worth 33.3% of A-Level. Paper 2 involves three data response compulsory questions worth approximately 33 marks each and made up of three or four part questions.

Paper 3 is about business strategy and how businesses respond to changing opportunities and threats. We will explore a variety of scenarios involving leading firms such as Microsoft, Nokia, Kodak, Sony etc. What is the recipe for success in a volatile world? Paper 3 is examined through a two hour examination is out of 100 marks worth 33.3% of A levels. There is one compulsory case study followed by approximately six questions. The majority of A-Level students will progress onto a Higher Education Degree at University.

Entry requirement for international students

You will be expected to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or greater, High School Certificates must be the equivalent to five GCSE at grades A*-C / 9-5, which must include GCSE English Language, GCSE Maths and GCSE Business. (NARIC will be used to check equivalence).
