What will I learn?

The BSc Computing Science will give you a wide ranging understanding of computing in a variety of disciplines. Study topics include software development processes and technologies foundations of programming software modelling tools object-oriented analysis and design databases and web service development. Careers available in a dynamic industry include software developer or software engineer, web developer, systems analyst, database administrator, database designer, IT consultancy and technology sales. This course is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) as fully meeting the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered IT Professional and, on behalf of the Engineering Council, as fully meeting the academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partially meeting the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Part-time students must complete their studies within 6 years to gain BCS recognition. Continuous professional development lies at the core of the BSc Computing Science. All modules have personal development plans embedded within them and help prepare you to make an effective and immediate contribution to the workplace. You have the option of taking a double credit industrial placement module for three months in trimester 2 of the third year of the course, which will allow you to enhance your computing skills. There is also the option of a 12-month paid placement in an industrial or commercial setting, providing practical experience to complement your academic study.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants are expected to meet one of the following entry routes: the standard Scottish Highers entry requirement of BCCC (90 UCAS Tariff points), including Maths, Applications of Maths, or Computing; or the minimum requirement of CCC (63 UCAS Tariff points), including one of the same subjects. An alternative minimum entry of CC (42 UCAS Tariff points), including Maths, Applications of Maths, or Computing, is also acceptable if accompanied by successful completion of one of the following: UWS Foundation Academy, Foundation Apprenticeship, UWS Next Steps to University module, Routes for All, Top-Up, or LEAPS. Equivalent qualifications include A Levels at CCD (88 UCAS Tariff points) including Maths or Computing, a full T Level with Grade P (A*–C) in a relevant subject (96 Tariff points), the Irish Leaving Certificate at H3H3H3H4 including Maths or Computing, the International Baccalaureate with 24 points including Maths or Computing, or the Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) Access to STEM with grades BBB.
