Anaesthetists and intensive care doctors provide care to a broad spectrum of people - from completely healthy people having minor surgery, through to people with life-threatening injuries and illnesses. Although major advances have been made resulting in much improved outcomes, we know that overall in-hospital mortality after surgery is still around 3.5percentage. Our research is focussed on addressing ways of addressing this: improving our understanding of how the lungs, circulation and kidneys work in critical illness clinical studies investigating new ways of caring for elderly patients with hip fracture understanding and improving the safety of healthcare delivery in the peri-operative period.
