Course Overview

Are you passionate about teaching? The Professional Certificate in Education and the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (if you have a degree) are two year courses and have been designed to be innovative in their approaches to teaching and learning through their content and assessment strategies. You will gain the specialised skills and knowledge, apply learning to practice and achieve nationally recognised qualifications providing you with a route to employment in a large and diverse sector. This distance learning course will provide you with online materials and personal tutor support. You must be prepared to work as an independent learner.

The aims of the course are: To provide high quality initial training to people already teaching/training; To provide a thorough preparation for teaching/training; To develop practical teaching skills; To develop a wide range of inclusive teaching and learning approaches that promote equality of opportunity and cater for individual difference; To develop skills of reflective practice.*You will need to be in practice.

This course is supported by experienced academics who will guide and support you through your studies and practice.

One to one tutorials offer individual support and tutors can signpost trainees for additional help if required.

On successful completion of this course, you will achieve a Professional Certificate in Education or a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, awarded by the University of Greenwich.

Entry requirements

For international students

Students should normally have: A level 3 qualification in the subject you teach (or equivalent); A level 2 qualification in Literacy / GCSE English at grade C (4) or above or working towards this qualification; Teaching a minimum of 100 hours (50 hours each year); Teach or train, at least part of the time, groups of students; Teach or train in a variety of contexts which could be different subjects or different levels over the 2 years; A mentor, who has a Certificate in Education or equivalent, will support and observe you teaching and who has a specialism in your subject area; Evidence of current teaching/training experience for a minimum of 2 years; For a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), you will need to have a minimum of a 2.2 degree.
