Course overview Join an impactful Modern Languages department and undertake your own research project in German studies. Enjoy a full programme of research training. With an extensive range of specialisms and our dedicated research Institute for German and European Studies, we'll support you to contribute original research to the field of German Studies. Course highlights The Department of Modern Languages is an interdisciplinary hub of research and we welcome research proposals that go beyond subject boundaries. You can be jointly supervised by an academic specialising in German studies and another from a different discipline, depending on your research interests. Benefit from the research expertise of our Institute for German and European Studies, a joint institute between the University and the German Academic Exchange Service. Research a range of cultural, literary, historical, and socio-political topics related to periods from the Middle Ages to the present day. Conduct your PhD research from anywhere in the world through our online distance learning option.

You need a good (normally a 2:1 or above) Honours degree, or an equivalent qualification if you were educated outside the UK, usually in a relevant area.
