What will I learn?

Our MSc in Medieval History programme explores the dynamic history of the period between c.300 and c.1600. This period witnessed dramatic transformations across Afro-Eurasia and the formation of new polities, institutions and ideologies that changed the globe from the isles of Britain and Ireland to the steppes of Central Asia and the tides of the Indian Ocean. From the later empires of Rome and Iran to their medieval European, Byzantine and Islamic successors, students can explore the diverse worlds that emerged in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages as well as their interconnections. The range of expertise at Edinburgh is exceptional, bringing together experts in medieval history from Britain to the Indian Ocean with specialists in late antique, Islamic and Byzantine studies, and it is the ideal place to explore the history of medieval Scotland. You will be able to focus on specific places and themes and/or explore more global approaches to Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. This is a flexible degree that will let you pursue your interests while also offering a few surprises along the way as you immerse yourself in this momentous and ever-evolving period of history. This programme’s flexibility means it is ideal for those interested in undertaking a year of further study at master’s level, but it can also be tailored to suit those hoping to pursue advanced doctoral research in medieval history in future. You will have access to world-class resources. You will get the opportunity to work with a range of sources, from manuscripts held in the university library’s Special Collections to objects in the city’s museums (subject to availability).
