What will I learn?

Embrace flexibility - choose to combine study of two or three languages from Catalan, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Experience a new approach to language learning with our CLIL (Content Language Integrated Learning) teaching method - study topics of cultural significance, designed and delivered by expert researchers. Tailor your degree to your interests - choose to continue with languages you studied at A level, begin a new language, or mix the two! Live and study in one of the most culturally mixed cities in the UK. Make global connections on your course and through our student societies, including our culture and language magazine - The UoB Linguist. You’ll be assessed in different ways to suit each module. At the start of a module, you’ll be told how and when you’ll be assessed. Methods will vary but may include coursework (e.g., essays), group or individual presentations and projects, exams, reports or computer-based assignments.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants are required to hold three A Levels at grades ABB, including a grade B in the advanced language they wish to study. However, it is also possible to study two beginner (including post-GCSE) languages without taking an advanced language, provided that one of the beginner languages is French or Spanish. General Studies is accepted. The International Baccalaureate Diploma is also accepted, with a minimum of 32 points overall and 6,5,5 in Higher Level subjects, including Higher Level or equivalent in the modern language(s) intended for study. For BTEC qualifications, the following combinations are accepted: BTEC Extended Diploma at DDM plus a B at A Level in the required subject(s); BTEC Diploma at DD plus a B at A Level in the required subject(s); or BTEC Subsidiary Diploma at D plus AB at A Level, including the required subject(s). Applicants not currently studying the required advanced language at A Level may instead present an independent language diploma at B2 level as evidence of language proficiency. Accepted diplomas include: DELF-B2 (French), DELE-B2 (Spanish), Goethe-Zertifikat-B2 (German), DILI-B2 (Italian), and TRKI 2nd Certificate (Russian). These qualifications, assessed against the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, must be presented in addition to three A Levels or equivalent qualifications. Applicants who take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and meet standard offer criteria will receive an alternative offer one grade lower, provided they achieve grade A in the EPQ and make Birmingham their firm choice. Similarly, applicants who take the Core Maths qualification may receive a one-grade reduced offer plus grade A in Core Maths, except where A Level Maths is already being studied.

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
